Furry Training Partners: Celebrating National Pet Day with Our Team’s Dogs

National Pet Day, founded in 2006 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, is celebrated every year on April 11. It’s a day to appreciate the joy and companionship that pets bring into our lives while also raising awareness about the many animals in shelters still waiting for a loving home. And it’s also an opportune time to post and view pictures of cute pets all over social media!

Beyond companionship, pets can have a significant impact on our well-being. Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that having a pet can help lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and blood pressure while also reducing anxiety and loneliness. And when it comes to staying active, dogs are the ultimate training partners!

From daily walks to high-energy adventures, there are many ways to keep moving with your pet. Ever heard of Canicross, Bikejoring, or Skijoring? These sports involve running, cycling, or skiing while being harnessed to your dog—turning your furry friend into both a workout buddy and a source of motivation. And of course, classic activities like trail running, biking, hiking, swimming, or even a brisk walk all contribute to a healthier lifestyle for both you and your pet.

To celebrate National Pet Day, we asked some of our GOREWEAR team members how they stay active with their dogs—here’s what they had to say!

MICHAEL & LUNA

Hi! Michael here - Global Marketing Activation Leader at GOREWEAR and this is my rescue German Sheppard mix, Luna. My wife and I adopted her from Nuzzles & Co based in Park City, UT when she was just 8-weeks old. Luna, now 8, lives to run and has been my training partner/security guard since she was a puppy, often accompanying me on 20+ mile trail runs. She is truly the happiest when we are out on the trails and I think that motivates me to get her out there as often as possible. The only thing she might love more is chasing squirrels, bunnies, and critters while we are out on the trails.Don't worry, she never catches them!

KATRINA & SHELTER DOGS

Hi, I’m Katrina – Marketing Project Manager and a true dog lover. I grew up with a German Shepherd named Nils, which probably sparked my love for dogs and my belief that every dog deserves to be cared for and loved. While I don’t have a dog of my own right now, I support an amazing animal protection organization called Einfach Tierschutz e.V., which rescues street dogs and cats in Romania and helps find them loving homes in the DACH region. Last year, I volunteered at their shelter in Romania, where I spent time walking the dogs, giving them treats, and showering them with affection. It was honestly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I plan to do it again!

SASKIA & EDDIE

Hi, I’m Saskia, a Product Developer at GOREWEAR and a new dog parent. Eddie, my rescue Podengo from Portugal, has quickly adapted to life as a mountain dog, enjoying snowy hikes and exploring the outdoors. This summer, we’re introducing him to running alongside my bike, with the goal of him joining me on future bikepacking adventures. It's been amazing to see how much he’s grown in just six months, and he’s already an integral part of the family. Sharing these adventures with him has been so rewarding, especially knowing his journey from the shelter. Every moment with Eddie feels even more meaningful as he settles into his new life.

JENNY & ASPEN

Hi, I am Jenny – Ecommerce Leader and this is my Pomsky (Pomeranian and Husky mix) Aspen. Aspen is 2 years old and is my hiking buddy. He's cute, so everyone loves to stop and pet him. Fortunately, he likes everyone and will gladly soak up all the attention! My tip for anyone who regularly hikes with their dog is to keep up the habit. Regularly hiking with your dog is a great way to get outside and keep your dog on an exercise regimen. Dogs and humans alike need regular exercise outdoors!

BEN & TUCKER

Hi, I’m Ben. GOREWEAR’s Marketing Leader and this is my Lab/Shepherd rescue dog, Tucker. Tucker is 3 years old and the only thing he likes more than going for a run with me is chasing his frisbee! Each morning when I sit down near my front door to put on my socks (GOREWEAR socks, of course!), Tucker comes and stands right next to my running shoes to make sure that I don’t leave without him. After we put a few miles in on the roads or trails, I always return tired and feeling accomplished, but Tucker only has one thing on his mind…he immediately goes looking for his frisbee to play some more!

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT ANIMALS IN NEED

No matter how big or small, every action counts. This National Pet Day, let’s celebrate not only our own furry companions but also the many animals still looking for a home. ❤️🐶🐱

Not everyone can have a pet, but there are still plenty of ways to make a difference in the lives of shelter animals. Here are some ideas from our GOREWEAR team on how you can help:

🐾 Katrina’s Tip: Visit your local shelter — many offer programs where you can borrow a dog for a walk or spend time playing with cats. Check out organizations like the Kaua’i Humane Society or find one near you! If you have more time, consider volunteering at a shelter like I did with Einfach Tierschutz e.V.

🐾 Jenny’s Tip: Consider becoming a foster home, like I did with Summit Dog Rescue! Providing a temporary home for a pet can be life-changing for both of you.

🐾 Saskia’s Tip: Donate supplies like pet food, blankets, or toys—or contribute financially to help organizations like Viva la Hund e.V. where I got Eddie from, to provide care for animals in need.

🐾 Ben’s Tip: Get involved with a local rescue organization. There are so many groups working to move animals from unsafe situations and help them find new homes and they can all use our support. I got Tucker from Pawfect Life Rescue, but there are so many groups like this all over the world.
