Making the Most Comfortable Windbreaker Ever

At GOREWEAR, every new product starts with solving a problem for the consumer.

For our latest range of windbreaker jackets—designed for road cycling, running, and mountain biking—the challenge was clear: How could we create a lightweight, highly breathable, and wind-resistant jacket that feels exceptionally comfortable against the skin?

To answer that question and learn more about how the team at GOREWEAR set out to solve that problem, I spoke with Product Line Manager Michael Jean-Jacques and Material Specialist Tobias Pickart.

What was the Main Challenge in Developing the new Windbreaker Range?

Michael Jean-Jacques: Our goal was to design a jacket that provides three-season protection with outstanding comfort. Traditional windbreakers often trap sweat, allow too much air through (especially after repeated wear and washing), or cling uncomfortably to sweaty skin. We set out to solve all of these issues in our new range.

How did You Find the Right Material to Use for these Jackets?

Tobias Pickart: We started in the lab, testing different fabric constructions and finishes to find the ideal balance of reliable wind resistance, breathability, and next-to-skin comfort. After multiple iterations, we developed a specially woven fabric that met all our performance criteria.

What makes this Material Unique?

TP: Three key features set it apart:

  • Wind-resistant properties to keep athletes protected in changing conditions.

  • High breathability to prevent overheating during high-intensity efforts.

  • An anti-wet cling interior that reduces contact points with the skin, ensuring comfort even when sweaty.

And all of this while remaining lightweight and packable.

How did You Test the Prototypes?

MJJ: Lab testing was just the beginning. We had athletes—cyclists, runners, and mountain bikers—put multiple different prototypes through their paces in different conditions. Their feedback helped us refine the fit, optimize construction details, and fine-tune the overall design.

Why was Long-term Durability a Priority for this Jacket?

TP: Many windbreakers rely on coatings that degrade over time, reducing their effectiveness. Our fabric is engineered to maintain its wind resistance through repeated wear and washing, ensuring consistent performance for the long haul.

What can Customers Expect from this Windbreaker?

MJJ: A lightweight, high-performance layer that adapts across seasons. Whether you're chasing a PR, hitting the trails, or out for a casual run or ride, our range of jackets delivers the perfect blend of protection, breathability, and comfort - durably.

The new GOREWEAR windbreaker range comes in three styles – CONCURVE for running, SPINSHIFT for road cycling, and FERNFLOW for mountainbiking. All three are designed to keep you comfortable and performing your best.
